Salem’s performative work as Sombre Tempête is a play on the magic role of the court jester, allowing the phantasmagorical qualities of the clown to unveil deeper questions about primordial waters and genderfluid self becoming. Salem finds solace in the deep blue of cyanotype and considers the process of translation between emulsion and alternative photographic processes an underlying metaphor for the nature of his performances.

Salem is an interdisciplinary artist that has earned a BFA with a concentration in photography from East Carolina Univeristy (2021) and an MFA from SUNY Buffalo (2024). Salem is based in Buffalo, NY and currently serves as an Instructor of Art at Buffalo State University. Salem recently exhibited “Transevangelist Blue” at Project 308 Gallery in North Tonawanda, NY (2024) and is participating in group shows locally in Buffalo, New York (Hallwalls, El Museo, CEPA Gallery) and internationally (Bangkok, THA (Cinema Oasis), London, UK (Holy Art Gallery).
